In these Quick Guide downloads, learn more about the key environmental legislation, standards and good practice guidance when it comes to managing your infrastructure.
Legislation
Legislation encompasses the legal instruments that establish UK environmental law, comprising Acts of Parliament (often derived from EU Directives) referred to as primary legislation, and secondary legislation in the form of regulations. This provides the legislative framework that regulatory bodies use to enforce compliance.
Standards
Standards are not legally binding but assist operators in understanding the law and how to comply with it. Adhering to these standards can help an operator demonstrate they are doing everything reasonably practicable. There are several internationally recognised standards bodies, such as the British Standards Institute (BSI), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENLEC).
Good practice
Good practice is developed by professional or trade bodies and, in some instances, regulators. While not legally binding, this information assists operators in understanding the law and how to comply with it. Following such guidance can help an operator demonstrate they are doing everything reasonably practicable.
