Getting to know Rutendo Chihota, Project Manager

Meet the people behind our success as we unveil the stories, passions, and expertise of our dedicated team. Discover how their experience enables us to become a trusted environmental services partner for clients across the UK. This time, let's get to know Rutendo Chihota, Project Manager.

What did you do before working at Utility Line?

Before landing at Utility Line, I actually worked as an Operations Manager for a security installation company in Essex, managing a team of over 120 people. While I was there, I was also chipping away at my master's degree in construction project management at the University of Portsmouth; I'm just one unit away from the finish line.

My educational background actually started with a BEng in engineering, focusing on aerospace and aeronautical engineering at the University of Leeds. Unfortunately, the job market in that specific field wasn't booming at the time, which is how I ended up pivoting and eventually landed at Utility Line.

What do you do at Utility line?

These days, I work as an Assistant Project Manager (pre-construction) here at Utility Line. It's been a whirlwind nine months so far, but I've been loving the challenge. Basically, I jump in right after a project is awarded and manage everything from the initial stages up until construction begins. Think of me as the guy who wrangles the designers, orders all the necessary equipment, keeps the client in the loop, and handles any design changes that pop up along the way. It's all about making sure everything runs smoothly.

What is the biggest challenge facing customers who require high-voltage connections?

One of the biggest hurdles our clients face when it comes to high-voltage connections is securing a steady supply from the grid. Basically, there's limited power available for new, large-scale consumers, which can cause serious delays when they want to get up and running.

On top of that, there aren't any clear policies in place yet to manage the growing infrastructure for electric vehicles. It's definitely an evolving landscape.

What excites you about working for Utility Line?

Every day at Utility Line throws a new challenge my way, which is exactly what I thrive on. Plus, the team here is awesome – a real mix of personalities that makes work genuinely enjoyable. The company culture is also super supportive of growth and development, which is a huge plus.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I'm a huge basketball fan and love hitting the court whenever I get the chance. I'm also a bit of a travel enthusiast – random UK trips are my thing at the minute, although I'm not picky when it comes to exploring new places.

What’s next for Rutendo in 2024?

Looking ahead to 2024, my biggest goal is to finally finish my master's degree. Wish me luck.
