Mechanical and chemical aeration

Mechanical and chemical aeration to return oxygen to polluted waterbodies.

We provide mechanical and chemical aeration services to any organisation that has had a pollution event that is affecting the oxygen level within a waterbody.

Waterbodies support aquatic life which is dependent upon oxygen within the water to live. Oxygen levels can be depleted in waterbodies by events such as pollutions or algal blooms.

Depleted oxygen levels can lead to damage to the aquatic life including fish deaths, which in turn leads to regulatory enforcement action, financial penalties, and reputational damage.

Features and outputs

  • 24-7 365 UK wide response
  • Hydrogen peroxide application and monitoring
  • Direct dosing from boats or bankside
  • Post-application monitoring of residual hydrogen peroxide levels (Environment Agency requirement)
  • Ongoing water quality monitoring
  • GIS-based calculations of waterbody volumes and dose rates
  • Ecological Impact Assessment for fish, aquatic macro-invertebrates, aquatic macrophytes, and protected species.
  • Liaison with regulatory bodies.

Added value

We have successfully responded to incidents affecting rivers, lakes, and canals across the UK with rapid response times.
Our team includes experienced water quality specialists, qualified chemists, fisheries scientists, and aquatic ecologists who carefully plan and monitor each application to ensure compliance with Environment Agency guidelines and health and safety requirements, while also ensuring that the environment is protected.
Our experts are fully hazardous chemical trained to COSHH regs.

There are two principal methods of aeration that can be employed to boost oxygen levels in a waterbody: chemical aeration and mechanical aeration. Our water quality experts will determine the most appropriate aeration solution through consultation with you and your key stakeholders including the regulator.

Mechanical aeration solutions may include deployment of venturi, splash and compressor-based bubble solutions. Chemical aeration solutions will include regulated dosing of the waterbody with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).

A chemical dosing operation can be completed within several hours and will result in an immediate and sharp boost to the oxygen level in the waterbody, the elevated oxygen level can then be monitored to ensure full recovery.

Mechanical aerators can equally be deployed within a few hours and will gradually increase oxygen levels in the waterbody and can remain in situ to help to sustain the elevated oxygen levels.
